Summer Photo Challenge on Better KC!

If you’re wondering why I haven’t been blogging lately…this would be why! I am getting ready to launch a super-fun program this summer, all about inspiring creativity among moms (and everyone else!) over the summer! I’ll be officially launching next week, but I was thrilled when Better KC asked me to come on their show and talk about the program a few days ago.

2016 Kansas City Mother’s Day Gift Guide

KC Mother's Day Gift Guide 2016

Mother’s Day is right around the corner (can we talk about how fast 2016 is flying?) and one of my favorite things is giving and receiving locally-sourced gifts. As a small business owner myself, I know how hard we all work to succeed at this crazy entrepreneur life, and I want to support others as much as I possibly can. Collaboration over competition…always!

So I’m super-excited to share this Mother’s Day Gift Guide, full of items from incredible Kansas City-based designers, makers and retailers! If you’re looking to pick up something for the mother figure in your life (aunt, grandmother, BFF, whoever!), I’ve got you covered!

KC Mother's Day Gift Guide 2016

For the No-Fuss Fashionista Mom:

Nickel & Suede is known for their lightweight leather earrings that look amazing and are so comfortable to wear. This KC-based brand is available at many retailers throughout the metro (Made in KC is one of them!), but you can also buy their items online. I love all the color choices and styles! Something for everyone!

For the Organized Mom:

Etiquette Boutique is now featuring glam inspired planners, stationary, journals and more! I know as a mom I’m always writing down notes and lists, but then I leave them all over the place. I’d love to have them stored all in one location, in a cute notebook that looks sharp as well as being super-functional.

For the Mom Who Loves Flowers, But Wishes They’d Last:

Who doesn’t enjoy getting a pretty bouquet on a special occasion? Unfortunately, however, the joy is usually short lived…until now! Gift a succulent from Flowers By Emily instead, and mom will be able to enjoy them for much longer.

A Preschooler’s Guide to Kansas City!

Last week I made a huge leap for my business…I upgraded my camera! (For all of you camera nerds, it’s a Canon 5D Mark III and it’s AMAZING…) But of course, right after I brought home my new baby, Tate had the entire week off of school. I didn’t have much time to play around with my camera, and I knew I had some big shoots right around the corner, so we decided to make the best of it. Tate picked his five favorite places in Kansas City, and we brought along the new camera so that we could get to know each other a little better. In the end, I found we had a bunch of fun footage, so we put together this little video of our week!

Tate’s favorite places in Kansas City include…

  • Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant – Where a train drops your food off right at your table and you order using and old school telephone!
  • The Nelson-Atkins Museum and Sculpture Garden – Tate’s favorites are the knights in armor display, the Egyptian and mummy display and the glass labyrinth.
  • Top Golf – This kid would spend his entire life at Top Golf if he could. If you going during a weekday morning it’s half price!
  • Science City at Union Station – We got family passes this year and we are loving having them when we need a fun, indoor activity.
  • Little Freshie – The best snow cones in the city, hands down. And their Ginger Fizz is what my dreams are made of!

With summer coming, we are on the lookout for some good, local activities…what are your favorite things to do in Kansas City?

All for the City!

Check this out! Recognize anyone? I was super lucky to be invited to be a part of this Sporting KC ad that is now airing on TV here in Kansas City! It’s been really fun hearing from people that have seen it and wanting to know if that was me saying “Olathe”…yes, it’s me! We filmed this a few weeks ago, and I had no idea it was airing, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear it was on during the Royals home opener AND the finale of The Walking Dead.

(And for those of you who have asked…no, I’m not actually from Olathe. TV magic!)

Yount Photography Teen Fashion Show

AYP Teen Fashion Show!

One of the best parts of my creative journey over the past year has been the opportunity to work with so many talented photographers and artists from my area. I think being a creative entrepreneur can be a lonely experience, even for an introvert like myself, so making these connections with other makers, creators and artists has been paramount to keep me on the right path. And every day I’m inspired by the work these artists are doing in our own community, to continue making it a better place to live, learn and work.

One of these women that I’ve been lucky to meet this past year is Amanda Yount, of Amanda Yount Photography (AYP). Amanda is one of those people who is so giving with her talents, reaching out and being open and authentic with not only myself, but tons of other photographers as we grow our own businesses. Amanda’s primary clientele is high school seniors, so this year she decided to put together an INCREDIBLE opportunity for her Senior Elite Models and for our entire community!

Yount Photography Teen Fashion Show
I am thrilled to announce Amanda Yount Photography, the premiere photography studio for Kansas City-area seniors, is hosting a Teen Fashion Show on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the The Pavillion at Logan Woods starting at 4pm. Proceeds will benefit Higher M-Pact, a 501c3 organization dedicated to empowering high-risk urban youth.

As a fashion-forward, high school senior portrait photographer, Amanda is passionate about creating a positive and empowering experience for my teen clients, while also giving back to other youth throughout Kansas City. Amanda Yount Photography will feature both our Senior Elite Models and Higher M-Pact youth in this unique and exclusive runway show. The following high schools will be represented: The Barstow School, St. Thomas Aquinas, Concordia High School, Santa Fe High School and Higginsville High School.

Higher M-Pact’s focus is to mentor, develop and restore hope in high-risk urban youth and high-risk communities, by turning obstacles into opportunities. Their “Leaders of Tomorrow” mentor program offers intense, long-term mentoring for a select group of high-risk urban adolescents aged 11 and up. Higher M-Pact also provides life and social skills training, spiritual development, education, job training, guidance counseling, recreational service and teaches youth how to give back to the community. Higher M-Pact’s Project Restoring Hope features beyond school programs which promote structure and provide positive activities for youth in high-risk communities. Project Restoring Hope also includes annual events, activities and programs that focus on building relationships. Go to their website to learn more about their wonderful organization and how you can get involved.

Tickets for the Teen Fashion Show can be purchased either online by clicking here or at the box office. All proceeds benefit Higher M-Pact. I would love to see some of your smiling faces there!
