Newborn Family + Portrait Session : Cora Loay

Earlier this week I shared some images from a Fresh 48 session I did with a sweet family and their new baby girl. Well, sometimes I get really lucky, and my clients not only want a hospital session, but a family session with their new addition as well. There is something so magical about being able to be there in the hospital with the parents of a brand new little one, and then be invited in to their homes after they leave the quiet sanctuary of the hospital and return to their real lives. In this case, real life included two big brothers who were very excited to have a baby sister to love on. I am so grateful I was able to capture this family in this special stage of their life. These early days are so sweet, but can be easily forgotten in the chaos and reality of parenthood. I hope these images and scenes will always remind them of the first incredible week when Cora Loay joined their family.

Fresh 48 Session : Baby Cora

Fresh 48 Newborn Kansas City Photography Session

Sweet little Cora Loay entered the world with a bang on Saturday morning, surprising everyone with her quick arrival! She is the first daughter in her little family, and the first girl in a generation of boy cousins and family members. This beautiful girl is loved beyond words, and I am so grateful I was invited in to her first sweet days at the hospital and was able to spend some time with her family. She’s a delicate dream, and I can’t wait to watch her grow!

A Magical Maternity Session

It was a rainy day…cloudy and windy and particularly gross. But right when we were about to give up, the sun peaked out, the birds started chirping, and this magical maternity session was the result! I’m so excited for this little baby girl to come into the world next month, but before she arrived, we were able to capture a few images of her radiant mama. With two little boys at home, she is a total rockstar! She was a trooper as we trekked through wet grass and even into a creek! And can we talk about those gorgeous dresses? I mean…wow.

Thank you to everyone who made this session happen, from the babysitter on-call to the lovely friends who provided the gowns to the friend who allowed us to climb around in her creek. Sometimes the stars align, and when they do, that’s when the magic happens.

Sneak Peek : Boudoir Session

About a month ago, I was fortunate enough to attend an incredible class on the art of posing for photography. Now, full disclosure, I am a blogger for {Hive-Workshops} who put on this amazing class, but I hadn’t been able to attend any of their workshops until this particular one a few weeks ago. My reason for attending was mostly so I could blog about it later…but holy wow, I got so much more than I expected!

The instructor, Petra Herrmann of Bella Boudoir in Kansas City, was incredible. While the techniques she taught us could work for many different genres of photography, I really felt my heart skip a beat when she talked about her boudoir sessions. This was completely unexpected! If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a bit of a dork when it comes to (ahem) sexy stuff. I can barely watch couples kissing in movies without squirming or running to hide in another room. So I was totally shocked when I felt the pull to boudoir photography.

A huge part of this inspiration came from Petra, who talked about photographing women of every age, race, shape and size. She told the class a big reason she does what she does is to empower women.

“I’m allowing them to see themselves as others see them,” said Petra. “And they are beautiful, no matter the age, shape or size!” – Petra Herrmann

I left the workshop feeling excited, but I had no idea what to do next. I mean, how do you end up doing a boudoir shoot when you have zero experience. Well, another photographer friend recommend I do one as soon as possible, before I could chicken out! I was lucky enough to have a friend who was interested in doing a session, and the stars aligned at the perfect moment.

You guys…the photos from this session are some of the best I’ve ever taken. For reals. I had so much fun creating this shoot and collaborating with my client, I knew when I left that I wanted to do as much boudoir as possible. And yes, I still can’t watch kissing in movies, but this is different. I felt a huge surge of GIRL POWER AWESOMENESS as I photographed this gorgeous woman, and I just kept thinking, “I definitely want to do this again.” When I saw the images on my desktop later that night, the deal was sealed. I love boudoir. I love my clients. I love my life.

Every time I think I’ve learned all the lessons there are to learn, I find out something new. This experience taught me to try something I haven’t before. Get out there, and do what makes you happy! The little voice inside my head was telling me, “You can’t shoot boudoir…you have no idea what you’re doing! You’re not good enough.” But it turns out, when you do something you’re afraid of, you might just end up finding out what makes your heart sing.

Sneak Peek : Welcome Baby Zoey!

A new baby is like the beginning of all things – wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities. ~ Eda J. Le Shan

Earlier this week I was lucky to be able to spend some time with seven-day-old Zoey and her sweet family. I was so honored to be asked to document this special time for this family. Little Zoey was a dream baby, and her big brother Gavin was a total rockstar. I loved watching him interact with his sister (and getting to chat with him about Transformers, because let’s face it, Optimus Prime is pretty darn awesome!). Thanks to this beautiful family for inviting me into their home and allowing me to spend an afternoon capturing their lives!
