Blog Conference Essentials

This Friday and Saturday is the Go Blog Social Conference, and I couldn’t be more bummed that I’m missing it! Unfortunately, due to a few family obligations and work commitments, I wasn’t able to attend this year, but I know everyone there will have a fantastic time and learn so much from all the creatives presenting. I’ve been to a few blogging conferences and workshops (including Alt Summit and the Go Blog Social Workshop last month) and I thought it might help out some conference newbies to see what I carried in my bag to my last few events. These are my absolute blog conference essentials!

Conference Bag Essentials

I carry my leather tote from Madewell pretty much everywhere. It’s been my go-to for years, serving as a laptop bag, diaper bag, travel bag, grocery bag and everything in between! Inside I decided to pack a small, cross-shoulder purse (from H&M years ago) in case I wanted to ditch all my stuff, but still carry my phone and wallet. I have to take notes in a real notebook, so I always carry a small spiral or two (this one is the Studio Oh! Spiral Notebook, Sweet Garden), along with the best pens in the universe, Sharpie pens…medium point. Don’t be fooled by substitutes, these pens are AMAZING. I may have a problem, I think I am a little too excited about my pens. Oh well.

I brought along my iPad Mini, although I will admit, I barely used it. I did look up some people’s blogs in between sessions, but I probably could have done that on my phone if needed. By the way, I used my iPhone 6 to take this photo, so it’s not included in the image. But I love it (and my cute case from Ampersand Design Studio)! I also brought my A Beautiful Mess Planner, which I carried in case I had post ideas and I wanted to check my editorial calendar and upcoming blog topics. I do all of my blog scheduling in this planner, because I’m way too visual to do it on a phone or computer-based calendar. I’m old school, I suppose, but it works for me. I also brought along business cards and my promotional postcards for my photography business. You will trade A LOT of business cards at events like Go Blog Social, so be sure you have a good stash to hand out.

As I’m a photographer, I always bring my DSLR camera along. I also brought along my lens pen
to do quick clean ups. I am that dork who always has food stuck in her teeth, so I threw some Colgate Wisp brushes in my bag for touch ups after meals. I also brought my Honest hand sanitizer, which is the only brand I use these days because it doesn’t sting my hands. I don’t usually carry much makeup in my bag, so I stuck with my basics, my Neutrogena concealer, my Charlotte Ronson lip stain (which is no longer available, wah!) and my Rosebud Salve
lip balm. Oh look, more hand sanitizer! Yep, I love that stuff.

I brought along a little bottle of lavender oil because I was feeling a little nervous about being in a room full of cool, smart women and feeling like a dork. Lavender helps chill me out, and I am glad I had it with me to ground my crazy. I also brought along a phone charger just in case I couldn’t find an outlet (happened) and my phone lost it’s juice (also happened…lots of Instagramming!). I have a few of these little floral pouches from J. Crew, and I use them to hold all the loose items in my bag (pens, lipstick, etc.). I also brought along a protein bar, because when I get hungry, it’s not pretty. I had a water bottle as well, but it appears it didn’t quite make it into the post-conference photo.

I hope this helps some of you who aren’t sure what to bring along in your bag this weekend! Just remember, the most important thing you can bring is yourself and an open mind. You’re going to learn so much, but it can be overwhelming, so make sure to get plenty of rest and take care of yourself! Have fun!

Freelance Life : An Update

Megan Freelance Life web text

It’s been a little over two months since I left my corporate world to join the freelance universe, and I figured it might be a good time for a little update. The transition to full-time freelancer has been fairly smooth, all things considered. I think I’d been freelancing on the side for such a long time, it was actually a relief to be able to take it on more seriously. I know I am lucky, because we have my husband’s good salary to support us, but at the same time, he has been able to build his business because I spent years supporting us while he was starting up, so it’s not all luck. I’d say going for it included a mix of good fortune, hard work, sweat and laughter, because this life is so silly, you have to laugh sometimes.

My biggest struggle has been balancing work and my kids, which is obviously very unique and has never been discussed on the internet before! (I hope the sarcasm was inherent in that statement, but if not, here’s a clue…) Lucy is in third grade, so she’s in school five days a week from 8:10 until 3:10. Tate is in preschool, and goes three days a week from 9:00 until 2:30. This means I have 15 hours per week kid-free. Squeezing everything in during those 15 hours is so very challenging. And that’s not taking in to account my other obligations, like volunteering at school, running our household, service work and watching The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix! Also, there have been many (many) weeks where there are government holidays or in-service days so the kids don’t have school. Yesterday was Tate’s last day of school for two weeks due to Spring Break, and today is Lucy’s last day for 10 days. Deadlines don’t seem to realize that it’s Spring Break, the party poopers, so that is something I have to deal with and work to overcome.

Now, I’m going to be real about this…it’s hard. But it’s temporary. And really, it’s not that big of a deal. One thing I’ve learned is I like working as a freelancer because I control the amount of drama in my own head. When I was in an office, I had a hard time staying out of the fracas when there was drama or issues, and I found myself constantly stressed out. I think since I’m working alone in my own space, even if it’s on a project with a team of people, I’m better able to keep that drama at bay. So the stress levels are lower, even though I’m probably working harder than ever. Also, I’m doing work I love! The work fulfills me creatively, so when I look at my to-do list and feel overwhelmed, I look again and actually READ the items on said list. And you know what? I have a really fun job! I immediately feel better when I look at things from that perspective.

So, that’s where I am, 60 days into this crazy new adventure. Yes, there are days when I work at IKEA (see photo on the right) because they have child care and free wifi. Yes, I am that lady at the gym who drops the kids off in the play area and then sets up my laptop in the cafe to work. Sure, I have to trust the Power Rangers to distract my kids long enough so I can send an email or jump on a quick conference call. But for the most part, it’s amazing. I’m learning new tricks every day. My biggest one? From 3:00 p.m. to 8 p.m., I do my best not to work. That’s family time, and the whole reason I am doing this is so I can be there more for my kids. So from when I pick them up from school to when they are tucked in bed, I am all theirs. Sure, I hire a babysitter once or twice a week for evening photoshoots, but if I’m with my kids, I don’t want to be on my phone or obsessively checking emails. Am I perfect at this? Hahahahaha. No. But I’m trying my best and I’m aware, which is a huge part of the battle. And I think, at least for now, I’m on the winning team.

Go Blog Social Workshop 2015

IMG_9669

I made it, you guys! If you read my last blog post, you’ll know that I was getting ready to go to a workshop this weekend and I was a little, tiny bit nervous. Ahem. And although I felt like a huge dork-face posting that video, I tend to do much better in situations when I’m authentic and real from the get go. So, yep, I was nervous. And yes, of course I felt a little silly walking in to a room of beautiful, talented, stylish women when I didn’t know anyone. But here’s the thing, I feel like when you own up to your fears and flaws, you take away their power. When I’m feeling anxious about meeting someone or making small talk, it’s just so much easier if I start out with, “Wow, I’m so nervous! I don’t normally do this, but I’m so pumped to meet you.” For me, that diffuses the fear and everyone seems to take a big sigh of relief. Not one person I met this weekend said, “Wow, you nerd, get a hold of yourself!” They were all kind and gracious, as people usually are. And you know what, if they aren’t, they probably aren’t people who I’m gonna want to hang out with anyway.

Lesson: Nerd out. Your kindred spirits will find you and it’s so much less work than pretending to be someone you’re not.

The presentations at the workshop were perfect for where I’m at in my blogging journey, but the best part was they were relatable for the attendees regardless of how long you’ve been at this blogging thing. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years, which basically makes me 80 in blog years, but I still got so much out of everyone’s comments and suggestions. The opening keynote was by Tobe Reed from Because It’s Awesome, who graciously left an encouraging comment on my video last week. She talked a lot about aligning yourself with what you want and trying new things. She also focused on trusting your gut, which is something I struggle with. At the end of her presentation, she was kind enough to hang out and chat with a few attendees, and I was lucky to grab a few minutes with her. So inspiring!

Next were several breakout sessions focusing on different aspects of blogging. I attended a rad photography session with the incredible Cassandra Castaneda. Much of what she said was not new to me, as a photographer, but I still learned so much about programs I’m not using (Lightroom!) and online tools for photographers and bloggers (Blogstomp…how have I never heard of you!). She also had some beautiful handouts that will be so helpful for future shoots. I’m working on some material for an upcoming photography workshop I will be leading for new photographers, and Cassandra’s presentation really inspired me and helped me see what a great teacher can do.

Next up was a session on video for blogging with Ivy from Wake Up for Makeup. If you’ve been reading for a while, you know I’m looking to expand in to more video, and since I come from a video production background, I have some of the experience and tools…but I was missing the inpsiration! Problem solved. Ivy’s energy and upbeat presentation left me ready to get filming. She also provided some amazing tips on equipment and her process, which I will definitely be referring to as I try to get this video blogging thing up and running!

I was a little unsure about the next presentation on web design and coding, because I have a lot of experience with that topic…however, as always, I was surprised by what I didn’t know. Which was a LOT! I’m a blogger that has grown up on this medium, so I have pieced my site together myself for years. However, after my redesign in 2012, when I finally hired a real deal designer to do the work for me, I swore I’d never go back. Fast forward a few years, and here I am again, with a major relaunch a few weeks ago designed by yours truly. It was a mess! Next time I’m definitely calling Ashley from The Blog Salon, who gave an awesome presentation with great tips, tricks and such helpful handouts. She talked a lot about the organization aspect of designing a blog, and that’s something I need to work on. Plus, Ashley is adorable and we chatted while I awkwardly waited to speak with Tobe Reed earlier in the day. I was nerding out all over the place and she was super-kind and funny, making me laugh my nerves away. Again, authenticity wins.

The closing keynote was by Morgan and Carrie from Ampersand Design Studio. I love those ladies! I met them in the airport on the way to Alt Summit a few years back, and have always admired their beautiful work! Their phone covers have lived on my iPhone since I discovered them, and their print work is fantastic. They also do an incredible job of collaborating with large companies, which they talked quite a bit about. These ladies didn’t dumb it down for us…they told us all about their high points and the lows of their careers, with humor and grace. They told us step by step how the got huge projects with big brands, and really got me thinking about collaboration and hard work. My favorite quote, “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.” Truth, friends.

So, yep, I was definitely nervous about this conference. I was worried about not fitting in and not belonging in this group of amazing, talented, creative women. But in the end, I am so SO GLAD I followed through and went for it. The speakers, the other attendees and the awesome team from Go Blog Social made this a workshop I won’t soon forget. Thank you all for making this nerd feel welcome!

Crazy Bananas Vlog : Conference Jitters

This weekend I am fortunate to be able to attend to totally rad Go Blog Social workshop, which is a full day event with tons of other amazing bloggers from Kansas City. I’m so excited! And terrified! Ack! When you’re an introvert, events like this one can be pretty intimidating. Today on the video blog, I’m talking about my fears, expectations and asking for any tips you may have on surviving an event like this one.
