I Heart KC : The Great Wolf Lodge

greatwolflodge-header

As a part of our “at home” Spring Break this year, I thought it might be fun to try and take the kids somewhere overnight here in the city. That way even though we weren’t going somewhere foreign and tropical, they’d still feel like we “got away.” And I wouldn’t have to travel for hours with a crabby two-year-old. Win/win.

Since it had been so snowy and grey for the past few months, we decided to hit up the Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, Kansas. The Great Wolf Lodge is a hotel that features a massive indoor water park and is about 20 minutes from our house. The minute we walked into the building, the kids started freaking out, and for good reason. This place completely caters to kids. From the hula hooping in the lobby to the bedtime stories told every night by the hotel’s mascots to the huge arcade, it’s a child’s paradise.

We stayed two nights, and while that was PLENTY, I’m sure you could spend a whole week there and not run out of things to do. We spent the days at the waterpark, but Lulu’s other favorite part was the Magiquest, a game set up throughout the hotel where kids used a magic want to open up treasures and secret powers. It’s hard to explain, but you can learn more about it here. It was nice to have something Lu was so excited about that was outside of the pool area, just in case we needed a break or were trying to get back to the room so Tate could nap a bit.

My only gripe with the Great Wolf Lodge would be the actual rooms. The walls were thin, and when you’re in a hotel full of kids, it can get pretty loud, which made it hard for my little guys to get to sleep. Also, we decided on a suite with what we thought was a separate room for the kids, but it was more like a divider with no door or full walls, so getting the kids in bed was a challenge. They loved the bunkbeds though, and thought the whole thing was a great adventure.

If you’re looking for a fun, easy, indoor getaway in Kansas City, the Great Wolf Lodge is an awesome idea! The location is pretty rad too, right in the Legends area, next to a huge outlet mall, the Kansas Speedway, Sporting KC and a ton of other activities.

Most of my photos from the Great Wolf Lodge were taken with my iPhone (hard to juggle a DSLR camera and a toddler in a swimming pool!), but I was able to shoot a bit of video in the waterpark. I hope you enjoy! Special thanks once again to Grammy who came with us on this adventure!

Spring Breakin’

Pretending to be a Whale

(2009, Spring Breaking at Honeymoon Island, Florida – Lulu, 2-years-old)

Remember when Spring Break meant multiple kegs and hotel rooms full of your best friends sleeping on top of each other because you were too cheap to get more than one room for eight people? Ahhh, those were the days. Lucy’s Spring Break started last Friday and goes until next Monday (11 days? Lucky kids…) so we are having a mini-staycation/roadtrip to make up for the fact that weren’t not doing something fabulous like going on a cruise. But for real, you guys, my sister and her family are going on a cruise for Spring Break. I think I drew the short end of the stick somewhere.

So while we’re exploring the Omaha Zoo and going crazy at the Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, Kansas, I’m leaving you with this fun video of a summer long past. We really didn’t use our underwater video camera much this past year, so I’m excited to get it out again for our stay at the Great Wolf Lodge, which has an indoor waterpark. Even though it’s no cruise, I’m sure we’ll still make some awesome memories.

Hope your Spring Break is full of fun, sun and maybe even sleeping in past 8:00 a.m. Oh, how times have changed…

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Weekend!

happy weekend 25

Oh, hey, it’s Friday! I can’t believe it’s already the end of the week, and at the same time, it feels like the longest week ever. Lucy and Tate both started back at school and daycare yesterday, and next week I start my new job. I’ve already begun my position at Design for MiniKind and I’m slowly getting going on my Go Mighty Challenge. It’s been hard to get up and at ’em, but I’m hoping next week and a more scheduled day will help me get motivated. Until then, here are some fun New Years themed links to get you through the weekend…

I love reading about how 2012 changed peoples lives!

I love this idea of making a few resolutions, but giving yourself credit for all the work you’ve done in the last year as well.

And finally, as a goodbye to the holiday season, here’s a video of Tate singing Jingle Bells on the porch swing in Colorado. Because, really, it’s adorable and if I don’t post it today, it will be too far past Christmas to make sense. Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you bright and early on Monday!
